What is an online associate degree?
An online associate degree is the lowest level college degree available through distance learning in the U.S. You can obtain an online associate degree from any college or university offering distance learning programs. Bachelor’s degree-granting universities and colleges also offer associate degrees. An associate degree is comparable to the first two years of a four-year bachelor degree at a university or college. You can successfully complete an online associate degree after fulfilling approximately 20 online courses, or 60 credit hours.
The compulsory courses mostly include English & Writing courses, Humanities, Math & Science, and Sociology. Associate degrees also take as much time as any conventional full-time course which is why these are commonly referred to as “two-year” degrees. However, online students suggest that some of the courses can even be completed in much lesser time.
Types of Associate degrees available Online
Two categories of associate degrees are offered to online students – Occupational and Transfer degrees.

The common transfer degrees include the Associate of Arts (AA) in major areas like Education, Sociology, Liberal Arts and Psychology andAssociate of Science (AS), , in major areas like Environmental Science, Mathematics,Art & Design, and Technology.
Aspirants who want to pursue a career in a specific field after graduation may choose to obtain an online occupational or vocational degree. Occupational degrees offer programs focused on the skills and knowledge essential to gain entry-level positions in your preferred field of interest. The common online degrees in this category include the Associate of Applied Arts (AAA) and Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in areas like healthcare, technology, and various business and computer related jobs. Some of the online occupational degrees let you further continue your education on completion. However many are terminal, where the credits may not be transferable to a bachelor’s degree course.
